Smaller projects, such as these place mats, are great for practicing free-motion quilting. Start with an easy, basic design and quilt it on your place mat. If you aren’t sure what to quilt or you just want to practice first, try doodling on a piece of paper. Practicing on paper will help you develop the skills you’ll need when you quilt on fabric!

If you can’t pick just one design, try a bunch of your favorite designs. The most important thing is to just have fun with it!
